OFFICIAL APOLOGY

 

Dear Colleagues!

Last year, an article by Chirkov E.I. and Zorina E.M. Using Content and Language Integrated Learning to build students ’basic skills in professional training was published In Proceedings of Communicative strategies of the information society (CSIS’19).

Unintentional mistakes appeared in the text, which were pointed out by E. Mede and S. Çinar, the authors of the work cited in the article.

 

 

They wrote us a letter:

 

Dear Zorina and Chirkova,

I am writing you regarding a misinformation in your article titled "Using Content and Language Integrated Learning to build students’ basic skills in professional training". Firstly, I appreciate your interest in our study as you cited it in yours. Unfortunately, we, Enisa Mede and I, are not "American scientists" and we kindly ask you to change it as "Turkish instructors" in order not to cause any further misinformation. Thank you for your understanding.

that we wanted to respond to immediately.

We also wrote a letter:

 

Dear Senanur Çınar and Enisa Mede,

I am awfully sorry for our mistake. Your article was published in an American journal. It was only at the end of the article in small print that the correct information was given. We could find it after having received your e-mail. Now we are trying to find out what we could do about it. I think It will take time. I will let you know when there is a result.

Tell Enisa Mede, that we are sorry for being inexact.

Of course, we were very upset by the fact that we made an unpleasant mistake. I think that this annoying misunderstanding occurred because the information about the authors was not indicated on the journal’s website at all:

 

 

We tried to correct our mistake by writing a letter to Anne Lacson, ACM bibliographer. Time passed; we did not receive an answer. Therefore,

 

We apologize on the website of our scientific psychological and pedagogical school CHIR-sreda to Senanur Çınar and Enisa Mede, the authors of the article “Implementation of Content and Language Learning and Its Effects on Student Motivation”, who are Turkish instructors and are not related to either American or Latin American scientific community.

 

Here, however, it is worth explaining that the word “scientist” for us means

1.      an expert who studies or works in one of the sciences (“methods of teaching” is a science)

2.      someone who systematically gathers and uses research and evidence, to make hypotheses and test them, to gain and share understanding and knowledge.

A good definition can be found on the website https://sciencecouncil.org/about-science/our-definition-of-a-scientist/, which says that

scientists can be defined by:

-        how they go about the use of statistics or data.

-        what they’re seeking understanding of.

-        where they apply their science (methods of teaching).

However, all scientists are united by their relentless curiosity and systematic approach to assuaging it.

Speaking about Senanur Çınar and Enisa Mede and their article, we are sure that they are engaging in a systematic activity to acquire knowledge, using the scientific methods connected with a very popular method of teaching, CLIL.

 

Turning to colleagues, I would like to once again remind you that you need to carefully approach the use of quotes, names of researchers, countries and article titles, so as not to be in an uncomfortable situation.
